Coffee is roasted in one corner while candles are poured in another. Delicious smells waft from the kitchen where meals are assembled for delivery. Artisans show their crafts, whether the medium be leather, polymer or even hairstyles.

It’s all happening at one location – The Madery. Housed on the lower level of COhatch’s library location at 752 N. High St., The Madery aims to create a new kind of marketplace, catering largely to businesses with a socially-conscious spin.

COhatch founder Matt Davis explains that it’s not just about space; The Madery’s entrepreneurs can tap into the resources and knowledge of the other business professionals that call COhatch home.

As socially-driven becomes a more popular way to do business, many entrepreneurs are focused on the impact they can make and their hearts are bigger than their business plans. Others are experiencing the common woes of entrepreneurship, ‘When do I make the leap?’ ‘How do I do this on my own?’

In response, Davis said his motto for The Madery became, “If you have a talent, gift and want to change the world, come see me and I will take every excuse away from you.”

The space functions as a headquarters and production facility for six local businesses – Eleventh Candle Co., Florin Coffee, Girl Set Free, InsideOutCreatives, Porttion and Red Bristle.

Eleventh Candle Co. hand-pours soy wax candles while supporting and employing those vulnerable to human trafficking, abuse, exploitation and addiction. Non-profit Girl Set Free also works to reach, rescue and restore women exploited by human trafficking, crafting a line of responsibly-sourced Italian leather goods.

Meal delivery service Porttion now has its own kitchen to call home, and a new line of 38 calorie truffles launching under the Sweet Cheeks moniker. Florin Coffee was able to move its roasting operations to a more central location and will keep all the COhatch spaces caffeinated.

InsideOutCreatives leverages the sale of polymer clay collectibles made by inmates at the Ohio Reformatory for Women to support women returning to the community. Red Bristle is launching its social enterprise salon, focused on socially-conscious products and developing hair stylists to have successful careers through empowerment and training.

Each business will keep its own hours, and is encouraged to develop revenue streams outside of foot traffic. Davis says The Madery will be open during events like the Worthington Farmers Market, serving up a pancake breakfast from the Porttion kitchen for the community to enjoy.

COhatch will also leverage the space for a unique spin on a fundraiser. Instead of doling out monetary donations, Davis will donate The Madery space.

“You use your influence, you bring 200 people and you get x percent of whatever they buy,” he says. “You have fun; you experience it.”

Bringing people into the space whether through open hours or fundraising events also creates brand loyalty. When a consumer can meet the person making their bag or pouring their candle, Davis says it’s hard to forget.

COhatch is on ambitious expansion plan, aiming for 10 to 12 locations in the Central Ohio region, and The Madery will expand along with it. Not every COhatch will have a Madery, but their will be additional locations, each with a unique curation of businesses and amenities.

The Madery celebrates its grand opening Thursday, April 19 form 4 – 8 p.m. For more information, visit cohatch.com/madery.
